Square + AI Phone Answering: What Actually Changes
A plain guide for restaurants already running Square on what changes — and what does not — when DineCall AI is added to the same phone line.
Square runs the counter. The phone line is a separate channel — and it is the one that gets missed during a dinner rush. This is what changes when DineCall AI is added to a Square setup, and what stays exactly the same.
What Square is
Square for Restaurants is one of the most widely used POS systems among independent restaurants in North America. It covers the counter: payment processing, order management, kitchen display, and table service. The phone line is not part of what Square handles. During a dinner rush, when the line is ringing and the team is on the floor, that is the gap.
What does not change
When DineCall AI is added to a restaurant running Square, the POS setup stays exactly as it is. The terminals, the kitchen display, the payment processing, the workflow the staff already know — none of it is touched. Square continues to manage the counter; DineCall manages the phone line.
The restaurant keeps its existing phone number. The AI picks up on that same line — callers dial the number they have always used.
What changes
Phone orders now come in without a staff member picking up. The AI picks up on the first ring, takes the full order in English, Cantonese, or Mandarin — switching mid-call if the caller does — and confirms the total on the call before it lands anywhere. Orders appear on DineCall's live kitchen board, and can also flow into the Square workflow via DineCall's ordering API, depending on how the restaurant is configured.
At King Do Seafood in Surrey, BC — a Square-using restaurant — the AI has taken over 100 phone orders since deployment. Owner Darrow: "Business is up, efficiency is way up — we're not going back." Lao Cai Chinese Cuisine on Marine Drive takes both pickup orders and table reservations on the same call, in English and 中文.
Setup takes 2–3 business days. There is no new hardware. The phone line is forwarded to DineCall's routing endpoint and the AI is configured with the restaurant's menu and policies. Square is not modified.
Pricing
One flat monthly fee and no commission: $199 CAD a month for the first 100 partner restaurants, then $399. No setup cost, and the Square integration does not add a surcharge.
